Primary Care Centre, Coolock

This new Primary Healthcare Facility, located on the site of an existing healthcare facility off Oscar Traynor Road in Coolock, Dublin, provides comprehensive community healthcare facilities including Primary Care, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Mental Health, Early Intervention, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dental and GP surgery accommodation. Ancillary to this facility is a single storey ambulance and paramedic base, contained in a separate single storey building on site, and 138 no. surface car parking spaces.

The three storey Primary Health Care Centre is set within a site bounded by the Oscar Traynor road to the north, suburban housing to the south, a park to the east and a sports hall and community facilities to the west. The building takes the form of a three storey brick volume that is carved so as to create a three dimensional volume of varied massing, in response to the differing site and boundary conditions, that maximises day-lighting to internal spaces while maintaining the levels of privacy and security required of a medical facility. The building’s structure and infrastructure allow for future expansion through the addition of a fourth storey and further expansion at first floor level.

The building’s layout comprises Consulting and Nursing treatment and Meeting rooms located on ground and first floor with more private areas and staff rooms located at the top floor. Circulation and accommodation throughout the project is organized around a series of open courts and terraces which provide daylight, visual relief and break-out space as well as assisting in orienting visitors and staff as they circulate through the building. The main accommodation stair, located at a pivotal point between two ground-floor courts and a small, raised courtyard at first floor, provides visitors with dynamic views though the building to external spaces as they move from floor to floor, reinforcing a sense of openness and well-being.

At first floor level an external raised court provides privacy between main circulation space and more sensitive consulting areas, while a walled, south-facing terrace above the main entrance provides a private and secure break-out space for patients.

The building has been designed to achieve an A3 BER and is full accessible to all.
