One Microsoft Court
COADY Architects, together with our design partners Perkins and Will were appointed to re-think One Microsoft Court, a dated 20 year old office building and to provide a cultural and design experience for staff equivalent to that delivered at the recently completed One Microsoft Place, bringing the Microsoft ‘campus’ together. The building itself posed many complex challenges including heat gain issues, extremely poor acoustics and dark floor plates.
The brief was to fully refurbish and upgrade facilities that were coming to the end of their life cycle and importantly to create a sense of a connected community centred around the atrium. It was fundamental to Microsoft that the new space should accommodate their developers’ ways of working in teams with writeable wall surfaces and small meeting rooms close at hand as well as having an array of spaces to collaborate, present and brainstorm.
The atrium and ground floor restaurant have been completely remodelled structurally with new feature staircases, bleacher seating, a suspended ‘look-out’ and a ‘garage’ for experimentation and play. The restaurant offers multiple dining options and there are recreational and wellness facilities.
This three-storey workplace was to act as an integral part of Microsoft’s global operations and there were major constraints and complex phasing due to construction taking place in a live operational building.
