STEM building, Athlone Institute of Technology is part of the Higher Education PPP Programme.
COADY Architects is leading an architectural team including FCBS and BDP to provide technical advisory services for the Higher Education PPP Programme (Bundle 1) being procured and delivered by the National Development Finance Agency on behalf of the Department of Education and Skills and the Higher Education Authority. The design team also includes JV Tierney Consulting Engineers, Mott McDonald and Linesight. Bundle 1 involves Project Facilities at six Higher Education Institutions across the country including a new STEM Building in Athlone.
The STEM Building at AIT is one of six HEI buildings to be delivered under a PPP contract through the NDFA for the DoES and HEA. The 6,065sqm l-shaped building has 21 laboratories, a lecture theatre, ICT rooms, collaboration and innovation spaces, departmental offices, administrative spaces and ancillary accommodation across three floors on a steeply sloping site to the west of the Main Institute Building (MIB) in AIT.
The building provides a link between the MIB and the Engineering Building to the north with extensive landscaping bridging the level difference between the two. Within the building, a double height foyer leads to collaboration and innovation spaces on the ground floor with laboratories on the upper floors reached by a hellerup stair used for informal learning and social interaction.
