VIA Tienen, Belgium
These three new buildings form part of a significant secondary school campus in the centre of Tienen, 45km southeast of Brussels. The development comprises of a stand-alone intermediate school building of 3,285m², a senior school building of 3,259m², and a new sports building with canteen and workshop of 2,462m².
The 3 storey intermediate school building is sited perpendicular to the road to minimise impact on the street and maintain vistas towards historic church spires in the distance. Set with an east-west aspect it and overlooks a new hard-landscaped play area. Accommodation is arranged to both sides of a central corridor on each floor. There are full-height windows to each classroom and the corridors ‘borrow’ natural light from the classrooms via high level windows. A large GP/canteen space is located at ground floor level overlooking the external play area and the stepped seating area leading to the externally-accessed student toilet facilities.
Located in the centre of the site and parallel to an adjacent workshop building, the 4 storey senior school building has a north-south aspect, and is similar in layout to the intermediate school building. It overlooks a hard-landscaped play area with a southern aspect and is directly adjacent to the sports building with a covered external area liking the two.
The sports hall is sunken into the site to minimise impact. Accommodation at Ground Level consists of a large GP/canteen space overlooking the external play area and, internally, the sports hall below. A generous stairs leads down to the main concourse for the sports facilities. This is lined with lockers and provides access to changing facilities, toilets and the sports hall. A welding workshop is also accessed from here.
