Masterplanning & Urban Design
The open spaces of our cities, towns and campuses provide the stage for community and public life. The design of these places is as important as the design of the buildings that enclose or occupy them.
Comprehensive analysis of site, infrastructure, cultural heritage, ecology, topography and landscape provides the context for our work. In collaboration with landscape architects and engineers, we have realised places of real character and clear identity in, for example, Letterkenny Institute of Technology and the masterplan for Airfield Farm.
Designing buildings is the core of our service and we have focused on places for health, education, work, leisure, recreation and living.
We create buildings that balance function, beauty and sustainability. We have led the way in low energy design solutions for health and education, emphasising natural ventilation and daylight, heat recovery and use of low carbon materials. Recent projects are rated BREEAM 'Excellent', LEED 'Gold', and BER A2 and A3.
While most commissions are full service and we guide projects from inception to handover and post-occupancy review, we have successfully completed PPP and Design Build projects for work, health and education use.
CPA has Grade 1 Conservation Accreditation. Working with specialist collaborators, we provide historical research, measured surveys, condition surveys, materials’ analysis, design and testing of conservation techniques, conservation plans and design for re-use to clients in the public and private sectors.
Recent work includes the preparation of conservation plans and the reuse of protected structures on the DIT Grangegorman site, and transformation of Leitrim Courthouse to a regional arts centre.
Health & Safety
The Health and Safety of building users, contractors and our staff are intrinsic to all we do. All staff are trained in safe design, construction and demolition. Project architect audit for safety, prepare Health and Safety plans for our works contracts and monitor the safety of work on site. Seniors and directors in the practice are accredited Project Supervisors for the Design Process.
Sustainable buildings come from a collaboration of dedicated professionals, working as a team with committed clients. Our commitment to sustainability includes appropriate site planning, selection of Green Rated materials, careful design of the building envelope, passive and active energy conservation and generation, renewable energy sources, natural ventilation and daylight, water conservation and harvesting, air tightness testing and thermal imaging of buildings, and waste management. We also monitor ongoing performance and utilise lessons learned in subsequent work.
Our headquarters for the PRA in Roscommon is rated BREEAM 'Excellent' and the Offices for Tipperary Town Council and the Department of Justice are rated LEED 'Gold'. Colaiste Choilm and the Community Nursing Unit in Kenmare achieve A2 BER.
ISO Quality Management
We are committed to providing the very best service we can and our work practices are accredited under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. ISO 9001:2008 controls how we run the office, and how projects are managed and programmed. ISO 14001:2004 controls the environmental efficiency and impact of the office operations and the designs we create.
These procedures are audited internally by trained staff and externally by SGS. Designs are audited during preliminary and detailed design stages and bench marked against earlier projects: the standard requires us to achieve better performance year on year.
